Unless you belong to a credit union through your employer or other large organization, it’s probably not the first place you’d think to look for a new checking account, especially not one paying high interest. You’d be making a mistake to overlook them, though.

Connexus Credit Union, based in Wisconsin, is offering 3.05% interest on checking balances up to $25,000 when you open an account with a minimum of $50. Connexus Credit Union offers membership to anyone in all 50 United States who belongs to the Connexus Association, a non-profit supporting causes in your community such as the American Cancer Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. To join Connexus Association, there is a one-time fee of $5 and no further obligations; you’re then eligible to open a Connexus credit union checking account.
