If you’re looking for a money market account where you can stash your emergency fund, you should be comparing these accounts and savings accounts based on both the interest rate and the minimum balance requirements. The last thing you want to do is fritter away your interest earnings on monthly maintenance fees, so make sure you can meet account requirements that let you avoid fees.
Citizens Bank, based in Rhode Island, offers branches and ATMs in about nine states and offers online banking to consumers in about 40 states. The Citizens Bank Performance Money Market account requires a minimum opening balance of $10,000 and has no monthly maintenance fees as long as you maintain a balance of $1,000 or more. The interest rate varies depending on your location. In New York as of January 9, 2012, accounts with $10,000 to $3 million earn 1.00 percent APY. You’ll also need an active checking account with at least five transactions per month to qualify for this money market account.
Compare money market account rates and terms online to find the highest interest rate and the terms that meet your needs.
