Whether your goal is to save for college tuition, a down payment on a home or just for an emergency, your money can grow faster when you keep it in a savings account with a high interest rate.

When comparing savings accounts online, be sure to check the interest rate first. You should also look at the minimum balance and whether you must pay a monthly fee, since fees can decrease your earnings.

Sallie Mae, best known as a student loan provider, recently introduced their Online High-Yield Savings Account with 1.25% APY. This account has no minimum balance requirement and no monthly fees. The accounts are FDIC-insured. Interest is compounded daily.

Sallie Mae accountholders can earn even more if they are Upromise members or join Upromise. Members who set up an automatic savings plan with at least $25 and fund the account with $5,000 or more can receive a 10% annual match on their Upromise earnings.

Imagine how much more of your money you could keep and invest if only you weren’t paying interest to credit card companies. If you find yourself in credit card debt, make a plan. Here are a few ideas.

Cut up the credit cards and stick to a budget.

If your expenses exceed your income, consider making changes to your lifestyle, such as, moving to a cheaper home, downsizing your car, or eating out less.

Call your credit card companies to see if you can negotiate a lower interest rate.

Your savings should be a high priority. Deposit as much as you can each month into your savings account. Invest any large balances in high yield accounts such as a certificate of deposit or a money market account.

To find the highest yields on savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit always compare rates.

The stock market fell in response to rumors that the Federal Reserve might raise the discount interest rate today (the discount interest rate is the fee banks pay when they borrow money from the Federal Reserve). The Feds raised the discount interest rate last month from 0.500% to 0.750%, sending a signal to the market that tightening is beginning.

According to Peter Boockvar, an equity strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. in New York, “The possibility of a discount rate hike would never leak out of the Fed.” Even though the rumor likely started outside of the Federal Reserve, futures traders increased their bet that the FOMC will raise the Fed Funds Rate at the November 2-3 meeting from 66% to 80% likely.

Any increase in interest rates will likely affect the yields you can earn on your savings accounts, money market accounts and certificates of deposit. Keep up with the most recent economic news so that you know how much interest you can expect to earn from your investments.

Just the slightest of movements happened this week in mortgage rates. According to the Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS), the 30 year fixed average conforming mortgage rate moved from 4.95% with 0.7% points to 4.96% with 0.7% points. The 15 year fixed average conforming mortgage rates moved from 4.32% with 0.7% points to 4.33% with 0.6% points.

Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac VP said, “With home prices starting to stabilize and even rise, homeowners on aggregate are slowly building back equity in their homes based on figures from the Federal Reserve Board. After losing almost $7.9 trillion in home equity since the end of 2006, homeowners regained almost $1.1 trillion over the past three quarters ending in 2009.”

Get a mortgage rate quote to refinance an existing mortgage or to purchase a new property. There has never been a better time to take advantage of today’s historic low mortgage rates.

Mortgage Rates Set to Rise?

The Federal Reserve announced March 16 that it would halt at the end of this month its $1.25 trillion program of buying mortgage-backed securities. And many economists think that that could mean higher mortgage rates soon.

So if you’re considering refinancing, or if you want to buy a home, it’s likely that now is the time to act.

Quicken Loans’ Home Loan Deals

Quicken Loans, which claims to be America’s number one online lender, may well be able to find you an excellent home loan deal. The company says that it has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, along with “…exclusive technology that ensures you get outstanding service and the fastest, easiest mortgage available.”

Right now, Quicken Loans’ mortgage rates are:

30-Year Fixed: 4.75% (4.955% APR)

15-Year Fixed: 4.25% (4.469% APR)

5-Year Adjustable-Rate Mortgage 3.50% Future Adjustments (3.414% APR)

Compare Mortgage Rates

For most Americans, their mortgage is the single biggest loan they’ll ever have. So it’s worth taking time to research the market thoroughly before signing an agreement, and compare current mortgage rates.

As expected, they decided to leave their main interest rate, the Fed Funds Target Rate, unchanged. The current target of 0.000%-0.250% has been in place over a year in order to stimulate the struggling U.S. economy.

Interest Rates Still Low for “Extended Period”

Economists and analysts around the world were watching specifically to see if the committee changed the language in its press release regarding interest rates remaining low for an “extended period.” Opinions were split on whether the economy was improving enough to warrant a change. Had the committee dropped the “extended period” language, it would have been considered a signal to the world’s markets that an interest rate hike is getting closer.

Today’s FOMC decision affects the interest you can earn on your savings accounts, money market accounts and certificates of deposit.
